Pinnaroo, a farming town in Australia, took part in a scientific study examining whether more exposure to arts and culture can improve the mental health and wellbeing of an entire rural community.
The project involved a range of creative activities that celebrate the heritage and culture of the region. The results were positive, showing improvements in mental health, social connection and people’s sense of belonging. Rates of depression dropped across the whole community, but most noticeable was the reduction in the group making art. There were also some positive lifestyle findings such as increases in healthy eating and a reduction in smoking. A participating farmer said he noticed a greater connectedness in the community as a result of the activities associated with the project.
Another example for a museum’s contribution to the wellbeing dimension of Health from the Wellbeing Framework.
