A cause for civic pride: Christchurch City Libraries case study

Tūranga is the central library in Ōtautahi Christchurch and the flagship of the Christchurch City Libraries network. Newly built, it opened in 2018 and is an important element of the post-earthquake city rebuild. The library lead team reached out to QWB Lab as they sought an approach to highlight more clearly to its stakeholders Tūranga's impact for the community and to unlock the latent value of its offerings.

To determine the value that the organisation contributes to the community, we applied the QWB Lab Wellbeing Framework and value measurement process.

We found that, naturally, books were a major reason to visit. Yet we uncovered that the impact of Tūranga is much more multi-faceted: It is highly valued for the peaceful environment it offers, for its family-friendly spaces, its helpful staff, and the diverse, often unexpected resources. It has become a community hub that provides a sense of belonging and pride in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
