Workshop: Wellbeing & Social Sustainability in Austrian Museums
Museums are more than just exhibition spaces; they are places that can strengthen social wellbeing and promote social resilience. But how does this work in practice? What projects already exist in Austria and what is the Wellbeing Footprint?
These were the questions we explored in a workshop organised by Museumsbund Österreich (the Austrian Museum Association) and hosted by Belvedere in Vienna in March 2026: Im Museum angekommen - Wellbeing & Soziale Nachhaltigkeit (Arriving at the Museum - Wellbeing & Social Sustainability):
- QWB Lab’s Sabine showed how measuring the Wellbeing Footprint can help cultural organisations unlock their wellbeing value,
- Kathrin Dünser, vorarlberg museum, shared insights from the first museum on prescription project in Austria,
- Markus Wiesenhofer, Österreichische Galerie Belvedere with Daniela Wagner and Andreas Minichberger, FH Wien, presented research into subjective wellbeing of visitors of the Free Friday Night at Belvedere,
- Peter Fritz, director of Salzburger Freilichtmuseum, introduced its participation in a European research project about the health effects of Eco-Cultural Experiences,
- Hanna Brinkmann, Krems University, showed how museums can contribute to health in older age, and
- we concluded the day with a mindful looking tour through Belvedere 21 guided by Sarah Scharf and Anna Skischally from Artful.
It was an inspiring day that showed that the trend to consider museums as wellbeing generators is spreading in Austria.
