The United Nations has joined the Beyond GDP movement. Noting that “GDP shows what we produce. It doesn't show what we value,” the UN have released a report with recommendations on how to move beyond GDP. With progress measured by the wellbeing of people and planet, not just economic output, it recognises that:
Time magazine published an article about it by Katrín Jakobsdóttir, the former prime minister of Iceland, and Nicola Sturgeon, the former first minister of Scotland. Together with Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand, they set out to prioritise the wellbeing of their people over the narrow pursuit of GDP growth and founded the Wellbeing Economy Governments partnership. This was later joined by Wales, Finland and Canada. They implemented national wellbeing indicators and embedded them in government decision-making to consider social and environmental outcomes alongside financial ones.
At QWB Lab we are excited that the Beyond GDP idea is gaining even more traction as it had inspired our “Beyond Visit Numbers” approach for measuring the value of culture organisations.
