Social connection: Vibrant social hubs

Public libraries are increasingly being reimagined as vibrant social hubs and catalysts for town revitalisation. This US article shows how modern libraries are designed to serve as community hubs, fostering connection and engagement in areas without traditional town centres.

Libraries have been evolving into vital 'third places' where people gather, learn and develop a sense of community. This shift underscores the importance of adaptable, inclusive spaces that respond to local needs. By integrating diverse programming and sustainable design, libraries are preserving their cultural role and are driving economic and social renewal in their communities.

In a recent QWB Lab project with community libraries in Aotearoa New Zealand, our data also showed that as well as their obvious role in providing books and knowledge, they play an important part in community wellbeing by being locally accessible, offering a safe space for social connections and local information exchange, thereby creating a sense of community belonging.
