Parental isolation is a significant issue with 62% of new parents reporting feelings of loneliness, according to recent UK research. Recognising that families make up a third of its visitors, English Heritage - which oversees 400 historic sites in England - has introduced a series of initiatives to create opportunities for connection.
Part of the programme are bonding benches placed in playgrounds and open spaces. These benches feature sliders that allow parents to signal whether they are open to conversation or would prefer some quiet time.
The initiatives also includes Walk and Talk Groups, communal activities and family checklists, all of which are designed to encourage interaction and support among parents. With these initiatives English Heritage shows how culture organisations can contribute to addressing social challenges by providing informal spaces for community building and connection.
