Civic Contribution: Libraries as democracy hubs
Libraries have long served as community hubs that offer equitable access to information and literacy. With this and their role as hubs for social connection that bring together people from various walks of life, they also contribute strongly to democracy and social cohesion.

The Europe Challenge, a programme run by the European Cultural Foundation, has compiled a book showcasing how libraries are addressing today's most pressing challenges. The first chapter is dedicated to libraries' roles as democracy hubs and demonstrates how access to information, literacy and lifelong learning are vital cornerstones of inclusive, democratic societies. They share 20 inspiring library initiatives relating to democracy and offer 10 tips for a democratic library. This shows that libraries can play an important role in supporting democracy at a time when it is under threat in an increasing number of places.
